The traditional meaning of "man up" suggests acting bravely and being tough, reinforcing narrow views of masculinity. Hearing these words implies failing to meet societal expectations of what a man should be. For years, we've accepted this phrase, using it to strengthen harmful gender roles and norms related to men and boys. Society has given this phrase significant power, impacting countless lives.

With this idea in mind, we launched in 2017 a campaign to open conversations about what #ManUp means, including the design of the #ManUp shirt. This t-shirt is a rebellious act against the oppressive force that impedes men and boys from being whoever they want to be. This design is the result of love, creativity, and an undeniable desire to openly defy rigid notions of masculinity. It seeks to create a conversation about men, boys, masculinities, and the challenges that we face when we hold outdated visions and expectations about the meaning of being a man. Gender norms have the power to shape how each of us experiences life. Gender norms and roles create a universe of expectations about what we should do, and how we should act, look and behave.

It’s time to act bravely and take responsibility for our role in shaping these norms.
